As wonderful as the farmers market is for bringing healthy, inexpensive food to the center of the city, it's involved in horrific illegal animal cruelty and public health issues surrounding the sale of animals stuffed alive into bags to be taken to peoples' homes and restaurants for food. In fact, the poultry vendor there has been cited by Animal Care & Control for appx. 700 animal cruelty violations (but the D.A. refuses to prosecute), and his employees have been physically assaulting peaceful demonstrators. Market management, the vendor, and police have been documented repeatedly illegally violating demonstrators' free speech rights and harassing and discriminating against them. Clearly, the current management is not capable of running the market, and it should be returned to the Division of Real Estate, which wisely prohibits live animal sales at its markets.
