Your coverage of the food crisis is very welcome, but it misses a central reason for persistent world hunger: debt (Big Read series, FT.com, July 27). Many of the world’s hungriest people live in the most indebted countries. Rising interest rates and a strong dollar leave the poorest governments with a stark choice: repay creditors or feed the hungry. Absent debt relief on a scale commensurate with short-term emergency needs, and the longer-term impacts of climate change in the food system, it is certain that the number of hungry people will rise beyond their already catastrophic levels.
